About Dr. Martha Barber
.. has served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal.
As principal of Tuggle Elementary School in Birmingham, Alabama, a school characterized during her tenure as a high poverty, high achieving school. Under her leadership, Tuggle received the following awards and recognitions: National Distinguished Title One School, ARI School (member of the sweet 16), International Reading Association Exemplary Reading Program Award, and Blue Ribbon School for Alabama.
Dr. Barber also served as Director of Schools, Senior Area Executive Director, and Assistant Superintendent for the Birmingham City School System.
For six years, Dr. Barber was on loan to the State Department of Education. In this capacity, she served as ARI Regional Partner Coordinator for the State Department
of Education, working with school districts in assisting them in developing world class schools.
In 2013, Dr. Barber retired from Birmingham City Schools as Chief Academic Officer for the Birmingham City School System. Retirement for her only lasted one year. She returned back to education as a consultant and after one year of consulting with Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic School, she assumed the role of principal of the school.
Dr. Barber also served as a National Panelist on Education in Washington, DC for then Senator Barack Obama and Representative Artur Davis entitled – Schools that are Beating the Odds. Additionally, Dr. Barber served as a National Panelist for No Child Left Behind in Washington DC for the late Sen. Edward Kennedy.
